The Benefits of Ductless Mini Split Systems

Ductless mini split systems are a type of comfort system for homes that work through a series of wall-mounted air handlers. Think of one of these systems as similar to a standard split system air conditioner, except the condenser doesn’t connect to a single indoor blower and evaporator hooked to ductwork. Instead, it connects to a series of separate mini-air handlers/evaporators placed throughout the rooms.

We offer installation of ductless heating and ductless air conditioning Fresno, CA. These systems aren’t ideal for all homes, but their benefits make them attractive options if you’re planning on making upgrades or changes to your HVAC system or if you live in an older home lacking ductwork.

Here are a few of the best benefits of ductless mini splits…

1. Cooling and heating together

You’ll often hear ductless mini splits referred to as “ductless air conditioning.” But few ductless HVAC systems are built only to cool. Most are types of heat pumps, and that means those wall-mounted air handlers can also send heated air into a house during cold weather. Like other heat pumps, ductless mini splits can help save money in heating mode compared to an electric furnace.

2. Higher energy efficiency

Installing a ductless mini split system can help reduce your energy bills on comfort around the year. One reason is that ductless units have smaller motors that consume less power than the larger blower fan motor in a standard air conditioner. Another reason is the absence of ducts. Ductwork allows for the air blown through them to gain heat or lose heat, lowering the overall efficiency of the HVAC system. Because ductless mini splits blow conditioned air straight into rooms, they won’t gain or lose heat on the way there.

3. Zone control

One of the drawbacks of central air conditioning and heating systems is that they send conditioned air to all the rooms at once when they come on. You can pay to have these systems fitted out with zone controls, but when you install a ductless mini split system, you have zoning built right in. Each of the wall-mounted air handlers can be controlled separately from the others, so you only need to provide cooling/heating to the rooms that require it.

4. Better indoor air quality

Ductwork collects a lot of dust and other debris over time. Whenever the blower for the HVAC system turns on, some of these pollutants will get blasted out into the air and end up circulating through the house and re-entering the ductwork. Ductless mini splits have no ducts to contain a reservoir of pollutants, and this helps improve air quality in a house. It can make a big difference for people in a household with asthma and allergies.

5. Flexibility

Ductless mini split heat pumps are the perfect solution for homes that otherwise don’t have the option to use an effective central cooling system because they don’t have the space for ductwork. This applies to old houses and new construction. You can get rid of those ugly, cumbersome window ACs you’ve had to rely on and enjoy energy-efficient and convenient cooling (and heating).
