Winter planning is already in motion, even though the season doesn’t officially start until the end of December. We all know how abruptly the cold temperatures can strike in the Central Valley!
If you felt you have subpar heating last year, we have advice on how to improve it this year. Some of this advice requires the assistance of our skilled HVAC technicians. Others are just useful tips. We’re invested in helping you enjoy the best comfort and safety in your home this season.
ONE: Schedule fall maintenance
You may have already done this, in which case you’re off to an excellent start for a cozy and trouble-free winter. Maintenance is the most important step for ensuring quality heating. When a heater receives a professional tune-up in fall, it will perform at better energy efficiency, higher capacity, and experience fewer repair needs (hopefully no repair needs). If you haven’t scheduled maintenance, call us today to schedule it and sign up for our Ultimate Service Agreement.
TWO: Use moderate and steady thermostat settings
Don’t run your thermostat like a yo-yo: pushing it up and down based on immediate comfort needs. Instead, keep one steady setting for the daytime when people are home and a lower one for night or when the house is empty. We recommend 68°F for the day, which is warm enough for comfort while cool enough to lower heating bills.
THREE: Have the ductwork tested and sealed if necessary
If you’ve never had the ductwork in your home tested before, we highly recommend this service. Your ducts may have multiple leaks, and these can lead to losing up to 30% of the heated air moving through them. That means a heater working overtime trying to make up the difference, and it can also create cold spots in the house. We’ll locate any duct leaks and seal them to restore the airtight condition of your ducts.
FOUR: Never delay calling for repairs when you think there’s a problem
We understand that if you notice a small problem with the heater (such as a strange noise or an odd smell), you’ll feel tempted to ignore it or put off having it repaired until later. But seemingly small problems might mask a larger problem underneath—just like an iceberg—and any malfunction can worsen and trigger others. The sooner you move to have professionals repair the heater, the better off you’ll be for the rest of the winter.
FIVE: Replace an aging heating system
We’ve saved this for last because when it comes to HVAC service in Fresno, CA, it’s the big one. Replacing a heater is a large job, and you’ll feel resistant to the idea at first. But in cases of a heater that is over its estimated service life and has shown signs of inefficient and ineffective performance, it is the best option. You’ll not only enjoy better quality heating and lower energy bills, you’ll also have a dependable and safer heating system.
