What Kinds of Repair Issues are Involved with Zone Control Systems

Monday, February 17th, 2014

Zone control systems divide your home into different sections, and allow you to control the individual temperature in each other. So if you’re cooking in the kitchen and have the stove turned up, you can set the heat lower there than in the living room, where someone else might be reading or playing video games. Some zone control systems are a part of a ductless mini split system, which uses multiple units spread across your home. Others establish a series of valves and seals in an existing duct system, which can then be adjust via a control panel to open or seal different sections of ducts. Either way, they still experience their share of breakdowns and repair needs. Here in Madera, heating installation services can usually perform repairs on them. But what kinds of repair issues are involved with zone control systems?

Frankly, it depends on the kind of zone control. For valves inserts in an existing system, the problems usually arise when they become misaligned or some issue appear with the controls that open and close them. As a result, you won’t be able to turn the heat on or off in a given section, which render the whole purpose of the system obsolete. A technician will likely need to access your ductwork and find out what the problem is.

With ductless mini split systems, the problem could stem from any number of causes. If your air flow it low, you may be experiencing a problem with the fan motor or a clog in the vents. Lower heat or cooling capacity could mean a leak in the refrigerant levels, while a build-up of dust or dirt could cause an overall lowering of efficiency (leading to higher energy bills).

Regardless of what kinds of repair issues are involved with zone control systems, you need the right kind of technician to perform the operation. Purl’s Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning offers heating installation and repair services in Madera, and our trained experts won’t rest until you are completely satisfied. Coats for Kids Pizza Party with Lincoln Elementary and St. Joachim School

Thursday, December 26th, 2013

Last week Purl’s Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning wrapped up our 2013 Coats for Kids drive with pizza parties at St. Joachim and Lincoln Elementary School in Madera.  The pizza parties gave us the opportunity to celebrate with the classes who collected the most amounts of coats for the 2013 Coats for Kids drive.

We had a great time at the schools with a surprise appearance from Santa himself.   Santa brought candy canes and stayed for photos with each of the kids.   Brian Driggs of Purl’s Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning took a moment to thank the kids for their part in bringing in 524 coats.   All of the coats collected stayed in Madera County and were distributed by our local  Salvation Army Office.    Mr. Driggs also talked about the importance of helping others in our community and how we can all make a difference.  During the party he also announced that all of the coats collected had already been given to kids in need.

At St. Joachim School, Santa had a couple of minutes to visit the kindergarten class, who brought in the 2nd most coats.   Santa thanked them for helping other kids who needed warm coats.  The kindergarteners were thrilled to see Santa!   What a great way to celebrate successful Coats for Kids drive in Madera.

We hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and thank you again for all your support!

Success at the 20th Annual Madera Light Parade

Friday, December 20th, 2013

All of us at Purl’s Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning had a great time enjoying the festivities of the 2013 Madera Light Parade. The parade was held on December 5, 2013 in downtown Madera and is an annual tradition to kick off the holiday season. For 20 years now, the Madera community has come out to celebrate the holidays by lining up along the streets of Yosemite Avenue to cheer for their favorite parade entry.

The Purl’s Sheet Metal crew entered the parade again this year with our fleet of antique firetrucks, loaded down with staff and family. We always have a great time and this year was no different! All of the relics came out with flare this year including the 1979 Crown Fire Coach Pumper, the 1951 American LaFrance Pumper and the 1948 American LaFrance Aerial Ladder Truck. We sang Christmas carols, ate hot dogs, sipped on hot cocoa and had a blast!

We hope to see you next year to continue the tradition and we wish you the best this holiday season, from our family to yours!

Ducts or No Ducts: Your Heating Installation Options

Tuesday, November 19th, 2013

Heating installation in Madera can entail a number of different systems, from traditional gas furnaces to heat pumps and ductless mini-split systems. Your heating installation options can vary quite a bit, but generally revolve around one basic question: ducts or no ducts. Both offer advantages, and the question of which one works best for you depends on the specifics of your home.

Most people are familiar with ducted systems and many homes come equipped with them as well. They branch out from a centralized HVAC system, through the crawlspace in the walls and other unobtrusive areas like the attic. That allows them to carry air from the HVAC system to any part of the house. They do their jobs well and if your house already comes equipped with them, then it makes sense to use them. On the other hand they’re not the most efficient means of conveying heat. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you could lose up to 20% of you heating capacity through your ducts, and if you need to install them as part of adding a new heating system, you lose the inexpensive start-up cost that serves as one of the great advantages of such a system.

Ductless systems usually rely on multiple units placed throughout your home, allowing you to tailor the heat in individual rooms to match your tastes. They also allow you to only heat those parts of the house that you’re using, cutting down on energy costs in the process. Indeed, ductless heating tends to be more efficient than ducted system in general, saving you money on heating every month. The only real down side is that installation tend to cost more, and then only if your house already has an existing system of ducts.

Based on that, you need to evaluate the state of your current furnace system, then make a decision after going over your heating installation options with a trained professional. Heating installation service in Madera, CA is covered by the experts at Purl’s Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning. We’ve served the Central Valley for over 60 years, and can help you decide between ducts or no ducts. Pick up the phone and call us today!

Heart of California Quilt Show Kept Cool with Purl’s Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning Support

Monday, July 29th, 2013

Purl’s Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning loves to support our local community. From fundraising for the Camp Fire Heart of CA kids program to assisting with the recent Heart of California Quilters’ Guild show, our goal is to build long lasting relationships with local organizations and community members.

We were recently called on to assist with an air conditioning set up for the Heart of California Quilt Show. Given the high temperatures, it was evident that the show attendees would need to be cooled down in order to safely enjoy the show. So, Purl’s Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning helped out with a portable air conditioner!

Here is a sweet note we received thanking us for the assistance:

Dear Mr. Davidson,

Thank you so much for setting up your air conditioning system at the Heart of California Quilt Show. We so appreciate your quick response to Mike Giersch’s call. It made a world of difference to all of us.

Over the two days, there were approximately 360 individuals who attended the show along with our guild members and vendors. The chairs that were set up in the front of the air conditioned “cool zone” were some of the most popular in the building. I heard many people comment that your air conditioning made all the difference in their enjoyment of the event.

Once again, we appreciate your support of our organization and the Quilt Show.

Sincerely,

Patty Huff

Show Treasurer

Air Conditioning FAQ: Typical AC Repairs

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

Is your AC making a strange noise? Does it only turn on intermittently? During the summer in Madera, CA, you need to make sure that your air conditioning system is in top shape, so that you achieve uninhibited comfort on a daily basis. Unfortunately, this is the season that can present challenges to air conditioners everywhere. With high temperatures and long days, there may come a time when you need air conditioning repair service. Even with professional installation and routine maintenance, your AC is still subject to general wear and tear over the years, and some repairs are inevitable. Call the Madera, CA air conditioning specialists at Purl’s Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning today for repair services throughout the area.

Let’s take a look at some typical AC repairs that you may come across this cooling season.

  • AC won’t turn on. Make sure you do things before you call for professional repair. Double-check your thermostat to make certain that it’s calling for cool air and that the fan is on. Also, check your circuit breaker panel to see if it has a tripped. If neither of those works, then you may need professional assistance. You could have a bad capacitor, the device that helps the compressor start up.
  • Frozen evaporator coil. The indoor evaporator coil circulates cool, liquid refrigerant, whose interaction with the warm indoor air changes the refrigerant into a gas (hence the name). But there are various imbalances and issues within the cooling cycle that can cause the evaporator coil to freeze up. It could be low refrigerant or a clogged air filter that is trapping cold air in the air handler. Not only will your coils need to be defrosted, but also the root of the problem needs to be fixed.
  • Inadequate cooling. This is probably the most common indication that something may be wrong with your AC. When your cooling system is no longer cutting the heat and humidity, then you need professional diagnosis to figure out the root of the problem. It could be an airflow issue, or it could be related to low levels of refrigerant circulating through the coils.

Call Purl’s Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning today for comprehensive air conditioning repair services in Madera, CA.
